Welcoming Isn’t the Same as Surrendering

A devotional for Wednesday
Luke 9:23
“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
There is a difference between welcoming Jesus and surrendering to Him. Welcoming is easy. It’s open-handed, but often temporary. Surrender is different. It involves laying something down. Control. Preferences. Plans. The crowd welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, but many were not prepared to surrender to the kind of King He actually was. They wanted a Savior, but not necessarily a Lord. We can fall into the same pattern. We invite Jesus into parts of our lives while still holding onto others. We celebrate Him, but hesitate to fully follow Him. Surrender asks a deeper question: will we trust Him even when His way looks different than ours? Will we follow Him when it costs something? This is where faith becomes real. Not in what we say, but in what we’re willing to lay down.
Question/Challenge:
What is one area of your life that Jesus is asking you to surrender, not just invite Him into?
