Take Off Saul's Armor

A devotional for Tuesday

"David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. 'I can't go in these,' he protested to Saul. 'I'm not used to them.' So David took them off again."
1 Samuel 17:39 (NLT)

Saul had an idea of what someone fighting Goliath should look like. So he dressed David accordingly. There was just one problem: David couldn't fight while trying to be Saul. Sometimes we spend so much energy trying to become the person we think God should use that we miss how He has already equipped us. We compare our gifts, personalities, resources, experiences, and abilities to someone else's and assume we're lacking. David understood that he didn't need to become Saul to be used by God. He needed to faithfully offer God what was already in his hands. You don't need someone else's armor either. God knew exactly who you were when He called you. Your limitations don't surprise Him, and your differences don't disqualify you. Faithfulness begins when we stop trying to become someone else and trust God with who He created us to be.
