Relationship, Not a Scorecard

A devotional for Tuesday

Scripture: Mark 12:30 “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.”

Reflection:

Love cannot be measured with a checklist. You can’t quantify devotion the way you track steps or calories. Yet we often reduce our relationship with God to spiritual productivity. Did I pray enough? Did I read enough? Did I avoid enough bad things? Those questions can quietly replace the deeper one: Am I loving God with my whole self? Love shows up in attention, trust, and desire for closeness. It’s possible to do many religious things while being emotionally distant. Just like in marriage, proximity does not guarantee intimacy. God is not looking for minimum requirements; He’s inviting wholehearted response. The greatest commandment is not about religious performance but relational surrender. Love reshapes motives more than rules ever could.

Question/Challenge:

Is your time with God driven more by obligation or by love, and what small shift could move you toward love?
