Recognizing the Cheap Imitations

A devotional for Wednesday

Deuteronomy 30:17
“But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods…”

One of the greatest challenges in choosing life is recognizing the things that pull us away from it. Moses warned Israel about turning toward “other gods.” For many of us today, these distractions may not look like traditional idols. Instead, they often take the form of priorities, habits, or pursuits that quietly shape our lives. Success, comfort, approval, and control can slowly become the voices we follow most closely. None of these things seem destructive at first. In fact, they often promise fulfillment or security. Yet when they take the place of God in our hearts, they begin to shape us into a different image. They lead us toward lives that feel increasingly empty or restless. Choosing life means learning to recognize these competing narratives. It means asking honest questions about what truly guides our decisions. Lent can be a powerful season for this kind of reflection. As we step away from certain comforts or routines, we often discover what we have been relying on most. In those moments, God gently invites us to return to Him.

Question/Challenge:
What voice or influence in your life might be competing with God for your attention right now?
