Peace That Isn't Earned
A devotional for Monday
Scripture:
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:1
Reflection:
Peace with God is not something we negotiate, achieve, or maintain through effort. It is something we receive because of what Jesus has already done. Many of us live as if peace is fragile, dependent on our obedience, mood, or spiritual consistency. But Romans 5 reminds us that peace is rooted in justification, not performance. To be justified means the verdict has already been declared: right with God. That means God is not waiting to see how you do today before deciding how He feels about you. This kind of peace settles the nervous system of the soul. It frees us from constantly scanning for disapproval. When we forget this, we start relating to God through fear or avoidance instead of trust. Peace with God changes how we pray, repent, and even rest. It invites us to show up honestly rather than defensively. This peace is not the absence of struggle, but the presence of assurance. And assurance changes everything.
Question/Challenge:
Where are you still trying to earn peace with God instead of receiving it?
