Hope That Holds
A devotional for Wednesday
Scripture:
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance.”
Romans 5:3
Reflection:
Romans 5 does not deny suffering...it reframes it. Suffering is not evidence that God has abandoned us, but a place where He continues to work. This passage does not glorify pain for its own sake, but it shows how God redeems it. Perseverance is formed when we stay present instead of shutting down. Character develops when faith is tested and not discarded. Hope grows when we discover God is still faithful in hard places. Biblical hope is not optimism; it is confidence rooted in God’s character. Suffering strips away illusions of control and self-sufficiency. It exposes what we rely on when things fall apart. When we rush past pain or numb it, we miss what God wants to form in us. God does not waste suffering, even when it feels meaningless to us. He uses it to deepen our capacity to trust and love. This hope does not disappoint because it is anchored in who God is, not how life feels.
Question/Challenge:
Instead of asking “Why is this happening?”, what might God be forming in you through it?
