Hearts Harden Gradually
A devotional for ThursdayScripture: Hebrews 3:13 “You must warn each other every day… so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” Reflection: Hard hearts rarely form through dramatic rebellion. More often, they develop quietly through neglect and numbness. Hebrews warns us that sin deceives slowly, inch by inch. A missed prayer becomes a pattern. A small resentment goes unaddressed. Weariness turns into indifference. Over time, what once felt tender becomes calloused. This is why Scripture emphasizes daily encouragement. Faith is sustained through regular recalibration, not occasional intensity. Community helps us notice what we might overlook in ourselves. When we stop inviting others into our inner life, isolation sets in. Hardened hearts often feel justified rather than rebellious. Lent interrupts this slow drift by asking us to pay attention again. God’s goal is not guilt, but responsiveness. Soft hearts are formed through consistent honesty and shared faithfulness. Question/Challenge: Where might small patterns be shaping your heart without you realizing it, and who could help you stay attentive?
