Ashes Reveal the Heart

A devotional for Monday

Scripture: Psalm 95:8 “Do not harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness.”

Reflection:

Ashes have a way of revealing what is already happening in the heart. When life strips away comfort, energy, and control, what remains often surprises us. In the wilderness, Israel’s thirst exposed more than physical need; it revealed a growing distrust of God. Their suffering didn’t create hard hearts; it uncovered them. Lent invites us to sit honestly with our own ashes instead of rushing past them. Grief, disappointment, regret, and unanswered prayers all press on the same question: Is God really with me? The danger isn’t asking that question. It’s letting the question turn into bitterness. Hardening doesn’t happen all at once; it forms slowly through unresolved pain and quiet resentment. Ashes can either humble us or embitter us. They can open us to God’s presence or push us away from it. God is not afraid of our honesty, but He longs for our trust. The wilderness becomes formative when we stay present with God instead of retreating into ourselves.

Question/Challenge:

What are the ashes in your life revealing about your heart right now, and how might God be inviting you to respond differently?
