Abiding, Not Performing

A devotional for Monday

Scripture: John 15:5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”

Reflection:

Jesus doesn’t describe our connection to Him as a contract, but as a living, breathing attachment. Branches don’t strain to prove themselves worthy of the vine. They simply stay connected. Fruit is not the result of pressure, but of presence. So much of our spiritual anxiety comes from trying to perform instead of remain. We treat our faith like a job review instead of a relationship. But Jesus never said, “Impress me.” He said, “Remain in me.” Abiding is about closeness, not accomplishment. When we drift, it’s rarely rebellion first; it’s usually disconnection. We get busy, distracted, self-reliant, and suddenly we’re trying to produce fruit on our own. The invitation of Jesus is not “try harder,” but “come closer.” Fruit grows naturally where intimacy is cultivated.

Question/Challenge:

What would it look like today to focus less on doing for God and more on being with Him?
