Leaving What Defines Us
A devotional for Tuesday
Scripture:
“Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”
Genesis 12:1 (NRSV)
God’s call to Abram begins with an invitation to leave behind what is familiar. This wasn’t just a physical relocation; it was an identity shift. Abram was being asked to loosen his grip on the things that told him who he was: his family, his culture, and his place in the world. Following God often requires us to trust Him with our sense of identity. We like certainty, stability, and predictability, but God often works through surrender and movement. Abram didn’t know where he was going; he only knew who was calling him. That kind of faith requires courage and humility. God sometimes asks us to step away from what has defined us so He can redefine us. This can be uncomfortable and even frightening. Yet God never calls us out of something without calling us into something better. Obedience opens the door for transformation. When we trust God with our identity, we discover who we were created to be.
Question/Challenge:
What familiar identity, role, or security might God be asking you to trust Him with right now?
