Two Kingdoms, Two Ways of Power

Pastor Thomas Crummer   -

A devotional for Tuesday

Scripture
Matthew 2:16
“Herod was furious… he sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem.”

Reflection
Herod’s response to Jesus exposes the nature of earthly power. When power feels threatened, it often turns violent, defensive, and cruel. Herod rules through fear, control, and self-preservation. Jesus, by contrast, rules through humility, love, and self-giving. These two kingdoms could not be more different. One clings tightly to power; the other releases it for the sake of others. This contrast still plays out in our world today in politics, workplaces, families, and even churches. We are constantly choosing which kingdom we will mirror. Jesus shows us that true authority is not found in domination, but in sacrifice. His kingdom grows not by force, but by faithfulness. Following Jesus means unlearning what the world calls power.

Question / Challenge
In what ways are you tempted to secure control rather than trust the way of Jesus?
