Darkness Isn’t the End of the Story

A devotional for Friday

The Bible begins with darkness, but it doesn’t end there. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture tells a story of a God who continually brings light into every shadowed place, whether in creation, in Egypt, at the cross, or in the fields of Bethlehem. The final chapter of the story gives us a breathtaking promise: one day, darkness will cease to exist entirely. No night. No fear. No grief. No hidden wounds. Just the glory of God illuminating everything. The darkness we feel now is temporary, but the light that’s coming is eternal.

“The city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.”
Revelation 21:23

This verse reminds us that God’s light is not fragile or fleeting; it is the very atmosphere of eternity. What we experience now as glimpses of grace will one day be the air we breathe forever. Every struggle with identity, grief, shame, addiction, fear, or sin is part of a story that has already been claimed by God’s victory. Our hope is not wishful thinking; it is anchored in the promise that God Himself will be our light. The end of the story reframes the heaviness of our middle chapters. No matter how dark things feel today, darkness is not your destiny.

Question/Challenge

What current struggle do you need to view in the light of eternity, and how does knowing the story ends in light change how you face it today?
