What Shapes Our Response

A devotional for Wednesday

Scripture:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.”
Romans 12:2 (NRSV)

Every day, we are responding to the world around us. Those responses are shaped by something deeper than we often realize. Fear of scarcity can cause us to hold back. The threat of pain can make us withdraw. Self-preservation can lead us to protect ourselves at the expense of others. God invites us into a different way of responding, one shaped by kingdom purpose rather than survival instinct. When our minds are renewed, our reactions begin to reflect God’s heart. We become less reactive and more intentional. God’s kingdom is not advanced through fear but through faithful obedience. When we allow God to shape our responses, we begin to see people differently. Instead of viewing others as threats or inconveniences, we see them as image-bearers. This doesn’t mean ignoring wisdom or boundaries. It means choosing love and grace over reflexive self-protection. Transformation begins when we ask God to reshape what drives us.

Question/Challenge:
What most often guides your responses: fear, self-preservation, or God’s kingdom purposes?
