Encounter, Not Inheritance
A devotional for Thursday
Scripture
“Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
Psalm 34:8 (NIV)
Reflection
Moses knew about the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob long before the burning bush. But knowing about God is not the same as knowing God. Tradition matters, and it grounds us in a story larger than ourselves. Yet tradition alone cannot sustain faith. God invites personal encounter – moments where belief becomes lived experience. These encounters often begin with curiosity, just like Moses noticing a bush that wouldn’t burn up. God meets us when we lean in, ask questions, and pay attention. Faith that is borrowed eventually collapses under pressure. Faith that is encountered grows roots. God does not shame Moses for asking questions; He reveals Himself more deeply. In the same way, God welcomes our questions, doubts, and wonder. Encounter turns theology from abstract ideas into lived reality.
Question / Challenge
Where might God be inviting you to move from inherited belief to personal encounter?
