A King Who Disrupts Our Expectations

Pastor Thomas Crummer   -

A devotional for Monday

Scripture
Matthew 2:3
“King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.”

Reflection
The arrival of Jesus immediately caused disruption, not comfort. His birth unsettled political leaders, religious authorities, and an entire city. This reminds us that God’s work doesn’t always arrive quietly or neatly. Jesus didn’t come to affirm existing systems of power; He came to reveal a new way of being human under God’s reign. Herod was disturbed because Jesus represented a loss of control, not a gain of peace. Often, we feel the same tension when Jesus confronts our habits, priorities, or assumptions. We want a Savior who comforts us, but not a King who confronts us. Christmas reveals that God’s love doesn’t cater to our desire for control. Instead, it invites surrender. The discomfort we feel may actually be a sign that God is doing something real. Jesus disrupts not to destroy us, but to free us.

Question / Challenge
Where might Jesus be unsettling you, not to harm you, but to invite you into deeper freedom?
