“Where Does My Help Come From?”

Dr. Jeremy Selvidge   -

A devotional for Tuesday

There are moments when life backs us into corners we never wanted to stand in. A diagnosis we didn’t expect, a grief that lingers, a secret that wears us out, or a fear that has more control than we care to admit. When the darkness closes in, most of us instinctively start looking around for something – anything – that might rescue us. We distract ourselves, numb ourselves, or scramble for our own solutions. The psalmist understands this tension deeply. When he asks, “Where does my help come from?” he’s voicing the cry every heart eventually whispers. And the answer he gives redirects us toward the only source strong enough to hold us.

“My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!”
Psalm 121:2

The psalmist doesn’t point to a strategy, a self-improvement plan, or a moment of good luck—he points to the Maker of heaven and earth. That means our help doesn’t come from something fragile, temporary, or easily shaken. It comes from the One who formed galaxies with His words and numbers the hairs on our heads. He watches, guards, steadies, and shields His people, not from a distance, but right beside them. When darkness feels overwhelming, this verse reminds us that God’s presence is already at work lifting what we cannot lift ourselves. Asking for help isn’t weakness; it’s wisdom rooted in trust.

Question/Challenge

What “source of help” do you typically run to first, and what step could you take today to turn fully toward the Lord instead?
