Jesus, the Light in Our Darkness

A devotional for Thursday

One of the most powerful moments in the gospel narrative is Jesus standing before a woman caught in her lowest moment and declaring, “I am the light of the world.” He doesn’t shame her, dismiss her, or ignore her reality. He simply shines light where darkness had tried to claim her story. This same Jesus steps into the messy corners of our lives today. The darkness that weighs us down is often rooted in sin, wounds, or fear that we keep hidden. But the light of Christ is not here to expose us for humiliation; it’s here to set us free. When Jesus steps in, shadows lose their grip.

“If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
John 8:12

Jesus doesn’t promise that we’ll never encounter darkness; He promises we don’t have to walk in it. His light leads us not just to survival, but to life that is whole and restored. Following Him means letting His truth illuminate the lies we’ve believed about ourselves. It means allowing grace to step into places we’ve avoided. And it means trusting that His light is stronger than any shadow. Light doesn’t argue with darkness. It simply appears, and darkness retreats.

Question/Challenge

Where do you sense Jesus calling you out of the shadows and into His light, and what courageous step can you take toward Him today?
